How the coronavirus got Brussels residents in the saddle
During the coronavirus period, many Brussels residents discovered cycling as a daily means of transport. But why exactly? And how do they feel about it today?
To find out, Pro Velo, with the support of Brussels Mobility, followed a panel of new cyclists who started riding during the pandemic between 2022 and 2024.
The results speak for themselves:
- 70% had already considered cycling before the lockdown
- 53% bought a new bike (often electric)
- 75% want to keep using the bike for most of their trips
- 98% want to continue cycling for at least part of their journeys
Enthusiasm is high, but clear obstacles remain: a lack of safe infrastructure, limited parking options, and concerns about road safety.
