Pro Velo, NECC EuroVelo Belgium
The EuroVelo network consists of 17 long-distance cycling routes and spans across Europe over more than 90,000 km. Belgium is crossed by 5 EuroVelo routes covering over 1,000 km. The ECF (European Cyclists’ Federation) owns the EuroVelo brand and coordinates its development at the European level.
At the national level, the coordination of the EuroVelo routes is managed by the EuroVelo National Coordination Centres (NECC). In Belgium, Pro Velo acts as the NECC for all three regions and is supported by tourism and mobility partners who have established a collaborative project agreement among themselves: Visit Flanders for Flanders, visit.brussels and Brussels Mobility for Brussels, and the CgT, WBT, and SPW Mobility and Infrastructure for Wallonia.
The mission of the NECC
The three Regions and Pro Velo have signed a new cooperation agreement for the period 2025-2030. This agreement sets a target for 2030: to make Belgium a nationally and internationally recognised top destination for cycle tourism by improving the cycle network and cycle facilities via EuroVelo, without losing regional identity.
To achieve this, the NECC is working on four main themes.
Monitoring
The aim is to collect, analyse and centralise data on cycle tourism and recreational cycling throughout Belgium.
The evaluation of the Belgian EuroVelo routes is also on the agenda, in order to keep the Regions informed of the state of the infrastructure, signage, services and communication. This evaluation is carried out in accordance with the European methodology laid down in the ECF’s “European Certification Standard”, for which two members of Pro Velo are certified.
Communication
Pro Velo communicates with the general public via the national website eurovelobelgium and answers questions via the email address eurovelo@provelo.org. Several articles are written and distributed each year to highlight the network and its services. Communication campaigns are also organised from time to time, such as press trips, videos and brochures, promotion in national press outlets, etc.
Governance
Pro Velo encourages contacts and information exchange within the network of Belgian actors. To this end, annual meetings are organised, both physically and online. These meetings deal with specific themes and provide an opportunity to draw up joint action plans and exchange good practices.
Pro Velo represents the Belgian EuroVelos at both national and European level within the ECF. This takes place during the ECF’s biannual meetings and during the annual general meeting and the EuroVelo conference. Belgian good practices are highlighted and Pro Velo informs its Belgian partners about experiences from other European regions.

Services
The NECC wants to guarantee a good experience and therefore focuses on services for cycle tourists. The range of services is highlighted and promoted on the eurovelobelgium website. In the long term, the aim is to harmonise this range across the whole territory so that users have a smooth experience.
State of the network in Belgium
The EuroVelo network in Belgium is one of the best-developed networks in Europe. The entire network is fully signposted, and the high-quality infrastructure can easily compete with that of our European neighbors, who are renowned for their cycling networks. In addition, the economic impact of cycle tourism is significant for any destination. Working together on the EuroVelo network in Belgium at national, regional, and local levels therefore helps to promote cycle tourism and, by extension, all tourist destinations, making Belgium a top cycling destination!
